What is GIM?
Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) is a depth therapeutic method that uses carefully sequenced classical music to facilitate access to non-ordinary states of consciousness — generating imagery, somatic experience, emotion, and meaning that emerges from below the threshold of ordinary waking awareness.
Developed by music therapist Helen Bonny in the early 1970s at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center — alongside some of the first clinical psychedelic research — GIM was originally designed as a music-only method for inducing therapeutic altered states. Today, it stands as one of the most rigorously trained and clinically grounded approaches to non-ordinary state work.
Within a session, music functions not as background or ambiance, but as the primary therapeutic agent: it structures the arc of the journey, activates somatic and affective processing, and holds the client through the emergence of material that language alone cannot access.
GIM is not guided meditation, breathwork, or hypnosis. It is a sustained music journey in an expanded state of consciousness — with the therapist present as a witness and guide throughout.
How it works
Emotional and somatic release in a contained, witnessed environment — material that has no other path out.
Symbol, image, and metaphor reveal unconscious relational patterns, defenses, and meaning structures.
Integration through mandala drawing and verbal processing bridges the non-verbal journey into embodied, behavioral change — something talk therapy alone rarely reaches.
Neurologically, music in an altered state bypasses ordinary cognitive filtering and activates limbic, subcortical, and default mode network processing simultaneously — the same neural territory implicated in psychedelic-occasioned neuroplasticity.
Preparation & integration
For clients moving through a psychedelic preparation or integration arc, GIM offers something distinct from talk-based integration: the capacity to re-enter and deepen non-verbal, imaginal, and somatic material that arose during a medicine session — without requiring another substance.
Music-facilitated expanded states share phenomenological features with psychedelic states: dissolution of habitual defenses, access to transpersonal and symbolic material, heightened emotional availability, and opportunities for meaning-making that transcend ordinary narrative. GIM creates a bridge between the medicine session and ordinary waking life — not by translating what happened, but by continuing to work in the same register.
My work focuses entirely on preparation, integration, and harm reduction. I do not administer, facilitate, or supervise the use of any substance.
